ABOUT THE REGION

The Pilbara is WA’s second most northern region, defined by the Indian Ocean to the west and the Northern Territory border to the east. The Kimberley Region lies to its north across the Great Sandy Desert and the Pilbara’s southern reaches border the Midwest and Goldfields regions. The region covers a total area of 507,896sq km (including offshore islands). Most of the inhabitants are located in the western third, whereas the eastern third is largely desert with few inhabitants. Today the Pilbara economy is crucial to the State, providing 2 of the State’s largest export revenue earners – iron ore and liquefied natural gas.

The Pilbara Mental Health & Drug Service (PMHDS) is a community based Mental Health Service, outreaching the other towns and communities, with in-reach as a Consultation Liaison (CL) service to the regional hospitals (ED/wards).

The service is divided into three community teams:

  • Pilbara West – Adult/Youth – For Karratha, Roebourne, Wickham, Point Sampson, Pannawonica and Onslow. Situated on Karratha Health Campus.
  • Pilbara East – Adult/Youth – For Hedland, Marble Bar, Nullagine, Newman, Tom Price, Paraburdoo and Western Desert. Situated as Head Office in Hedland Health Campus and a small satellite clinic at Newman.
  • Child Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) - <18 years old – serving the entire region with main Clinic at Karratha, smaller clinics at Hedland and Newman, and outreach to the Inland Pilbara, and other sites as needed.
