Position Summary

This is a Fixed Term Full Time (80 hours per fortnight) appointment for 3 years, salary as per WA Health System Medical Practitioners AMA Industrial Agreement 2016:

 

2019 - Year One - Registrar Years 1-7 $130,145 - $174,823 p.a. (includes base salary $109,678- $150,479 p.a., professional development allowance $10,048 p.a. and 9.50% employer contributed Superannuation). On call and shift penalties in addition.

 

2020 - Year Two - Health Service Medical Practitioner Years 1- 6 $250,335 - $315,611 p.a. (includes base salary $200,641 - $260,254 p.a., professional development allowance $30,633 p.a. and 9.50% employer contributed Superannuation). Commuted on call allowance of $51,593 - $66,922 p.a. and district allowance in addition. * new award rates will apply for 2020.

 

2021 - Year Three - Health Service Medical Practitioner Years 1- 6 $250,335 - $315,611 p.a. (includes base salary $200,641 - $260,254 p.a., professional development allowance $30,633 p.a. and 9.50% employer contributed Superannuation). Commuted on call allowance of $51,593 - $66,922 p.a. and district allowance in addition. * new award rates will apply for 2021.

 

In addition (in line with operational requirements), access to salary packaging up to $19,000 p.a., professional development opportunities and study leave/assistance may apply. Shift and after hours penalties are additional to this package.

Whilst this selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy, it may also be used to fill other "similar" vacancies throughout the health service. Position Profile: Do you have a passion for rural paediatrics? Are you seeking a guaranteed three year training pathway that will provide you the best experience in Western Australia preparing you for independent practice as a consultant in one of the most beautiful rural locations in the world - the Kimberley?

 

WA Country Health Service (WACHS) Kimberley has been successful in receiving a three year training grant from the Commonwealth Department of Health as part of the Integrated Rural Training Pipeline (IRTP) for Paediatrics. The anticipated start date for this position is 3 February 2020, and is a combination of training with the Child and Adolescent Health Service in Perth, finishing at Broome Health Campus in the Kimberley.  

 

As the successful applicant you will have completed Basic Training (including written and clinical exams) with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP). You will train under supervision and prepare for independent practice as a consultant. Your first 12 months will be as a Registrar employed at Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH), experiencing acute emergency medicine, Child Protection and Child Development. The second and subsequent years will be employed as Health Service Medical Practitioner with WA Country Health Service Kimberley, based in Broome. You will experience general and community paediatrics, with exposure to Aboriginal Child Health and Infectious Diseases.

 

About PCH: This is WA’s specialist paediatric hospital and trauma centre, providing medical care to children and adolescents up to 16 years of age. The 298-bed hospital provides treatment for the most serious medical cases, as well as secondary services including inpatient, outpatient and day-stay care.

About Broome: Broome has a busy 8-bed inpatient paediatric unit, a level 2 nursery, regional neonatal transport service, and will provide opportunities to engage in service development and research. There is a strong team of consultant paediatricians residing in Broome providing close supervision and support while also giving opportunities for independent practice. You will be part of the fascinating outreach program caring for children throughout the Kimberley.

 

This three year training position is accredited by the Advanced Training Committee in General Paediatrics of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as General Paediatrics (Rural) with a Perinatal Component. In this position you will be required to participate in the on call roster. Current Registrars and Senior Registrars are invited to apply. Appointment will be made based on skills and experience.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  1. Eligible for registration by the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Enrolled in the Paediatrics Training Program, Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) as an advanced trainee and demonstrates satisfactory progression appropriate for the level of training.
  3. Demonstrated current clinical experience in paediatrics and the management of acutely unwell children and neonates.
  4. Demonstrated organisational and time management skills, with highly developed communication, Interpersonal, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  5. Commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate medical teaching of junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.
  6. Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the Aboriginal Cultural Respect Framework.
  7. Current C Class drivers licence and an ability and willingness to travel including overnight stays away from home.
  8. Current knowledge and commitment to Equal Opportunity, Disability Services and Occupational Safety and Health in all aspects of employment and service delivery.

 

DESIRABLE CRITERIA:

  1. Possession of current Advanced Life Support, Advanced Paediatric Life Support or Emergency Management of Severe Trauma certificates.
  2. Demonstrated ability to monitor and review own clinical effectiveness.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to rural paediatric practice.
  4. Experience working with clients from a variety of cultural / ethnic backgrounds.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to clinical governance (Patent Safety and Quality), quality assurance, continuous improvement and clinical research in the field of paediatrics and adolescent health.
