Area Profile:

The Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS) is proud to be the leading service provider for paediatric healthcare in Western Australia, as the State’s only dedicated health service for infants, children and young people. CAHS is made up four service areas: Neonatology, Community Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), and Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH). Consisting of over 5,500 employees, our services are delivered at PCH and King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH), as well as across a network of more than 160 community clinics across the metropolitan area.

The Neonatology Department is comprised of:

  • PCH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, located within Perth Children’s Hospital on the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre site in Nedlands. The PCH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is the sole tertiary surgical/children’s hospital NICU in Western Australia. It is a 30 bedded unit, admitting over 800 infants annually and provides exposure to and involvement in the diagnosis and management of a variety of neonatal surgical and cardiac conditions, congenital anomalies along with those requiring specialist input from other departments within the children’s hospital. In addition, most outborn infants who require neonatal intensive care are transferred to the PCH NICU.
  • NETS WA is located within PCH NICU and is responsible for the retrieval and transport of sick newborns from Metropolitan Perth and the whole of regional Western Australia, some of which occur over long distances, utilising the services of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
  • KEMH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is located within King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women and Newborns in Subiaco. It is the largest tertiary perinatal NICU in Australia, admitting over 100 neonates <28 weeks gestation annually. All complex pregnancies within Western Australia are managed by feto-maternal medicine specialists at KEMH. The unit provides diagnosis and management of acute neonatal problems, especially those associated with prematurity. It also provides the delivery and stabilisation service for those born with antenatally diagnosed surgical conditions prior to transport to PCH.
