About the District

‘Carnarvon is Calling’ video

The Gascoyne is located North-West within Western Australia. The region has more than 600 kilometres of Indian Ocean coastline and stretches more than 500 kilometres inland through to dramatic desert country. With world class natural assets, established key industries, an entrepreneurial business community and innovative new opportunities, the Gascoyne is uniquely positioned, geographically, economically, and culturally, to capitalise on new economic trends and satisfy the appetite of its communities, investors, and foreign markets.

The inland Gascoyne features rich, red earth, rugged ranges, ancient rock features, vast sheep and cattle stations and Aboriginal culture. In the wildflower season the region is a riot of colour as the rains bring forth a blanket of wildflowers that stretch as far as the eye can see.

Whale sharks, rocky gorges and ‘drift snorkelling’ beaches are just the beginning when it comes to the coastal haven towns such as Exmouth. A world-famous tourist destination, this eclectic township in the pristine Coral Coast region is a stone’s throw from the iconic Ningaloo Reef, the sweeping Cape Range National Park and a breathtaking amount of marine wildlife encounters that are best explored with a snorkel or dive.

On your days off, grab your bathers and hit the road, it’s time to explore all that Exmouth has to offer.

Carnarvon is a subtropical oasis ideally situated between the shark bay and Ningaloo coast world heritage areas. The town and its surrounding areas are simultaneously a hub of adventure and a great place to rest, relax and recharge. Carnarvon is referred to as the 'food bowl' of Western Australia, producing 80% of the state's total fruit and vegetable crops and much of its seafood, with a thriving prawn, scallop, crab and fishing industry. Enjoy an abundance of fresh produce between immersing yourself in adventures and the culture and heritage of the Gascoyne district.

Carnarvon's central waterway, known as The Fascine, features several grassed picnic areas with BBQs, a swimming pontoon and children's playground, and is an ideal spot to catch the sunset whilst enjoying some local produce. Along the Fascine is the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, featuring 645 plaques to commemorate the lives lost aboard the HMAS Sydney II on 19 November 1941. The memorial was opened in early 2016 for the 75th anniversary of the ship's sinking.

The Gascoyne district is rich in resource and investment opportunities with an economy founded on quality horticulture, pastoral and fishery production, resources and tourism. It’s location on the central coast of Western Australia, directly adjacent to the offshore oil and gas fields and at the doorstep of the world’s fastest economic growing region – Asia, makes the Gascoyne the ideal base to provide superior air and sea access to areas of State significance and economic activity.

Enjoying around 320 days of sunshine each year, outstanding lifestyle amenities and a pristine environment, a growing number of people are calling the Gascoyne home.
