Position Summary

Shape the Future of Mental Healthcare in the Kimberley.

Are you a dynamic and innovative Psychiatrist dedicated to delivering services that address the distinctive requirements of the Kimberley community?

If so, WA Country Health Service is seeking Psychiatrist/s to work at Kununurra Health Campus.

We currently have 1FTE vacant and can provide a Fixed-Term Full-Time, Part-Time, Sessional and Block Style contracts for five years, with potential extensions. Block contracts, such as one month on and one month off, provide you with a balanced approach to work and personal life, ensuring your well-being.

 

About the Role

A Diverse and Impactful Role: Your primary location will be at the Kununurra Mental Health and Drug Service, but your role extends to Warmun, Halls Creek, Kalumburu, and Wyndham. This diversity offers an incredible experience, with Kununurra accounting for 60-70% of your role, and the remaining 30-40% being covered in the listed sites. You'll find meaning and reward in working with a highly experienced, effective, and supportive team of mental health practitioners, Aboriginal mental health workers, and clerical staff. Every day is filled with unique opportunities and challenges, while the team remains dedicated to providing the best care to patients and advocating for their well-being.

A Role Enriched by Culture: This position is ideal for clinicians passionate about Indigenous mental health and rural and remote mental health, as the majority of your workload will involve caring for Aboriginal people. Beyond the clinical aspects, the role allows you to explore the stunning East Kimberley region, a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. You'll have the chance to indulge in activities like hiking, camping, fishing, and embracing the beauty of the Australian landscape.

Collaborative Excellence: You'll collaborate with the Drug and Alcohol team, headspace, and local hospitals, as well as mental health teams. Exciting opportunities for quality improvement projects await you in this dynamic environment.

Strong Team Support: Your workday will be enriched by a team consisting of Aboriginal mental health workers, care coordinators, triage officers and dedicated clerical staff, all under the guidance of an experienced team leader. The integrated Drug and Alcohol team, along with the Safe Place program, provides additional layers of support and resources, enhancing the care you can offer to your patients.

Patient Diversity and Impact: Patients in the Kimberley region present with a range of conditions, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, depression, substance use disorders and impacts of trauma. Your role spans from community clinics to acute mental health concerns in the hospital and ED, providing clinical input to the drug and alcohol service and headspace. The majority of your patients will be Aboriginal people, accounting for approximately 80-90% of those you'll care for.

Qualifications:

  • Registered medical practitioner with specialist AHPRA registration.
  • Fellowship of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP).
