Area Profile: The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is the largest country health system in Australia and one of the biggest in the world, providing health services to approximately half a million people, including 45,000 Aboriginal people, over a vast two and a half million square kilometre area. The organisation comprises seven regions, with a strong network of public hospitals, health services and health centres located across rural and remote Western Australia. Our core business is the provision of quality, accessible health services to country WA residents and visitors.

Region Profile: Albany Health Campus is the major “hub” for health services in the Great Southern supporting our community of local primary care services and a network of smaller hospitals in the region providing a continuum of care to patients who may require more complex assessment and care in Albany or a metropolitan tertiary centre. Our integrated services allow our patients to receive the highest quality care as close as possible to home.

The Great Southern region is the largest and most diverse region within Australia’s South West. Located approximately 4-5 hours southeast of Perth, it varies from unspoilt coastline and idyllic seaside towns, to sprawling agricultural lands and national parks harbouring some of the world’s rarest species of flora and fauna. It’s an adventurer’s playground, with everything from rock climbing, and windsurfing, to four-wheel driving and coastal hiking on offer. Feast on some of Australia’s best food and wine from award- winning local producers at a local festival or farmers market. There are ample local shopping, café and restaurant services available to meet your day to day needs.

There is so much to explore in Albany and the Great Southern. Denmark, Walpole and Esperance are within driving distance and offer camping, outdoor activities, and world class food and wine experiences. The region boasts some of the best coastline in the country with picturesque beaches and natural sites to explore. Only a short drive away are the Stirling ranges, Porongorups and Bibbulmun track which offer a range of hiking options, perfect for day or weekend trips. There are a range of four-wheel driving tracks and free camping sites across the region as well. In late May to early October the region is blessed with a visit from humpback whales with many options for whale watching available daily from town. The regional weather remains milder throughout seasons providing perfect temperatures for outdoor exploring all year long.
