About the Great Southern Region

Located approximately 4 hours from the city of Perth, the Great Southern region is one of the most beautiful areas in Western Australia. The region covers an area of approximately 87,000 square kilometres and has a population of about 80,000 people. Famous for beautiful beaches, granite mountains and it is classified as a biodiversity hotspot! The coastline of this area is the massive contrast between pristine beaches with turquoise waters and the fearsome might of the Southern Ocean. Albany is increasingly recognised as one of the best places to observe the annual migration of the Southern Right Whale. The Stirling Ranges offer some the most breathtaking scenes in the state and additionally, the Great Southern region has a well-deserved reputation for cool climate viniculture.

Albany is the regional hub of the Great Southern with a population of 40000. The town itself is rich with heritage and is bordered by the Princess Royal Harbour. Steeped in history, Albany is WA’s oldest settlement which is reflected in its well-preserved buildings. In recent years, the growth of this town has been transformative especially with regards to bars and restaurants.

Located only a few hours from Esperance, renown worldwide as having one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and Denmark, for its vineyards, agriculture and sheer beauty, Albany is regarded by the local community as a great place to live and raise a family. Albany offers diversity in education having 17 primary schools and 5 secondary schools, with both private and public options available. Tertiary education exists through the Albany regional centre of The University of Western Australia and Great Southern TAFEWA. Albany locals are a cultured group with a strong theatre and performing arts culture. Extensive community sporting options are available with recently upgraded facilities, and Albany competes strongly in main sporting codes. There are a multitude of adventure sporting options including hiking, diving, four-wheel driving, cycling and sailing with strikingly beautiful natural spaces to enjoy.
